The first duty of man is to conquer fear; he must get rid of it, he cannot act till then.
Facing Fear and Moving Forward
Sometimes our fears get the best of us before we even get a chance to confront them.
They force us to become stagnant, ask too many questions and ultimately hold us back.
Other times we are able to move through them, creating the victory that once seemed so distant.
What if there was a simple process that could help us to face fear?
One where every angle was considered and all outcomes were accepted.
Here is a simple strategy that you can try.
Ask yourself, “what is the worst that can happen?”
I mean seriously, if you fail at what you are thinking about, what is the worst that can happen?
In some situations you may, lose your job, lose all your money, lose your home, have to move, lose some time, feel like a failure or maybe even be ridiculed.
However, facing fear is usually a lot less drastic than that.
It’s usually something like, someone could say no, you may have to reconsider what you are planning to do or you may just end up in the same place you are.
Once you know the worst that can happen, you can devise strategies to deal with those things.
For example, if you are going to lose your house, you may be able to stay with someone else, get a new job or find a shelter you can stay at for a while.
Essentially, know what your fears are and create alternative plans to deal with them.
In many ways the things we are scared of help us.
When you actually do this and find ways to deal with what you are worried about you will find you aren’t so worried anymore.
It also puts us back in control of the situation.
It reminds us that we still have options and with options there is power.
Liberation is often the result of facing your fears and moving through them.
All those things you thought you would never try and did.
Those moments you felt that were better than many others in your life.
Not because they may have been amazing to anyone else, but because in your internal world, it was something that at one point you feared.
The uncertainty that became truly known.
Those actions that freed you and made you think, “what else am I capable of?”
In the face of fear, we are all scared.
In the victories despite fear, we feel some of the greatest feelings that life has to offer.
Happiness often depends on which one we choose to let get the best of us.
